Cat Vaccination Standards & Guidelines

Core Vaccines (recommended for all cats)

These protect against severe, widespread diseases:

  1. FVRCP Combo Vaccine (usually combined into one shot):

    • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR/herpesvirus)

    • Calicivirus

    • Panleukopenia (feline distemper)

    • Start at 6–8 weeks old, booster every 3–4 weeks until 16–20 weeks, then 1 year later, then every 1–3 years.

  2. Rabies

    • Required by law in many places.

    • Usually given at 12–16 weeks, with booster in 1 year, then every 1–3 years depending on vaccine type and local laws.

Non-Core Vaccines (optional, based on lifestyle and risk)

  1. Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)

    • Recommended for kittens and outdoor cats.

    • Start at 8–12 weeks, booster in 3–4 weeks, then yearly if still at risk.

  2. Others (optional, rarely needed):

    • FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

    • Chlamydia

    • Bordetella

Additional Guidelines

  • Always consult your vet to create a vaccination schedule tailored to your cat's age, health, and lifestyle.

  • Keep a vaccination record for travel, boarding, or grooming needs.

  • Avoid vaccinating sick or stressed cats—wait until they’re healthy.
